Durga Puja is celebrated in West Bengal, particularly in the city of Kolkata. It’s the biggest and most important occasion of the city,  and I’m elated to be here, this year! Bengali Hindu communities in other locations across India and abroad celebrate Durga Puja as well.

Even though Durga Puja is a merry feast and social event with many secular elements, it is inherently a religious festival to honor the goddess Durga. During the five-day event people pay tribute to the goddess, people make offerings to her in ceremonies, through prayers, and sometimes through music. Each of the five days of the festival has different ceremonies and rituals held at each pandal before large crowds of worshippers.  This popular culture “pandal -hopping” is a well-established tradition. Families decked up in their best clothes as they visit pandals all over the city to offer their prayers before the idols. It is a time for family members to come together and to invite friends and relatives into their homes to enjoy special festival delicacies. It is also a time when people shop till they drop for new clothes, jewelry, and household items as well as gifts. Talking about shopping and dressing up, which is exactly the main objective of this post- to inspire and influence your Durga puja looks.

Although the festival lasts for 5 days, however, Bengalis take the 7th, 8th and 9th day of Navratri as the most important days of Durga puja, therefore, the dressing up game is quite strong during these three days. Over the next three days, I am going to share 3 different looks (keeping the essence of the festival in mind) that I have conceptualised and styled with outfits and accessories from my own wardrobe for all of you to take some inspiration and style yourself in your own unique ways. Here goes the first one-

I am going to attend Shaptami Puja wearing this Jamdani Print Tangali half-silk saree from Bangladesh which was a gift by someone dear to me- a friend whom I regard as my sister. The saree came with no blouse piece, so this black halter neck crop top from my wardrobe came to my rescue and played the perfect blouse to it.

SareeSutra: Durga Puja Look: Samanjri’s Raw Silk

Art, Motifs, Interior Décor, and Fashion have all evolved, harmonised and arrived at a level of exquisite globalization – under the big umbrella of Lifestyle. The extension of art to clothing and accessories, translates into inspiring designs.

Today many designers are storming the scene of fashion and lifestyle inspired by other art forms. One such Indian designer label is Samanjri. The contemporary ethnicity of its designs infuses a stylish charm in their creations. Exploring facets intrinsic to themes such as Vakratunda and Subhanallah, the label creates a whole range of garments influenced by them.

For Ashtami puja event, I picked a raw silk saree named Suryaashtakam from Samanjri’s collection. Conceptualised and designed by Manjari Varde, this saree has Gayatri Mantra written all over the Pallu in English using the AumAkshar – a unique font the designer invented to write English in the Devnagari style!  While researching for this post, I found out that the designer has a combined fascination for these extended to digital printing on fabrics – anything that can be draped – sarees, scarves, stoles and skirts! Some of Samanjri’s creations host Sanskrit chants from the Bhagwad Gita, or quotes by Kahlil Gibran or the famous Afghani Sufi saint Rumi.

Calligraphy, and inspirations from ancient Indian culture vividly manifest themselves in Samanjri’s fabric art and this is what inspired me to conceptualise a look around this saree that imbibes an old school charm. Vintage is what I call it! Long pull-through braid, high-forhead bindi, winged eye liner and nude lips are the perfect amalgamation of tradition and contemporary ideas and energies that blended aesthetically with the saree.

Tribal inspired Gamcha print bangles stacked with black bangles, pair of silver-oxidized Jhumki (earring) and an antique polish ring – both by designer Anita Dongre are all that it took to finish out this look.

SareeSutra: Durga Puja Look: Malasa Embellished Georgette Saree

For Navami Puja event, I picked a Malasa saree to wear. Quintessentially autumn/winter trendy berry lip, rose gold earrings and ivory sandals rounded out the last look for this Durga Puja.

Considering my last two Durga Puja appearances in ethnic sarees, this sighting in an elegant designer georgette saree made for a refreshing change for its modern style. But what truly stand out for me is this vintage chignon that I tried for the first time. Its kind of transporting myself to paradise by pairing it with the net three-fourth sleeves boat neck blouse fully embellished with sequins, zari and cutdana in floral pattern.

Being able to wear this stunning saree was exhilarating as it had been lying in my closet for sometime now. The contemporary design of this saree featuring nude pink georgette with sequins and cutdana embroidered patchwork on shoulder and sequins studded border is a treat to my personal style senses. It is visually stimulating, sensual and mysterious, and more romantic than one can imagine! It embodies a new edge for a new era in saree style.

I did not only fall in love with the pastel hue and its lasting impressions, but with the motif as well. Styling this look was a very liberating and equally effortless experience that was full of elegant energy and beautiful positivity, something I hope will shine through the images.

On that parting note, wishing you all happy Navami! As this is the last look for this Durga puja, I hope you enjoyed all the posts and found some inspirations through them. Currently, I am travelling, so when I get back to London after couple weeks, I will have lots to share on this space.

Stay tuned, stay stunned!

Bengali New Year’s Look: Tanusree Wearing Tanusree

As the pages of the Bengali calendar flips over to 1424 ushering into yet another new year, it is that time to bring out the newness in you and all things around you.

As the coveted and celebrated poet Tagore composed to hail the arrival of Boishakh, the first month of the Bengali calendar –

”Come, come, come O Boishakh come upon us.
With your ascetic breath, dust away that which is dying
Be gone the refuses and remnants of the year
Let go old memories, let go forgotten melodies
Let teardrops vaporize and fade into the distant skies.
Wipe away weariness, eradicate infirmity
Bathed in fire, may the earth gain purity
Come and blow dry the bogs of confused emotion
Bring forth, bring forth and sound your conch of destruction
Be gone, be gone the misty webs of illusion.”

This Bengali new year for me and Team Onetimefashionista will be all about innovation and creativity. It will be all about pushing the boundaries and maximising whatever we are blessed with rather than anguishing over what we don’t have.

A reflection of this principle of creativity and innovation can be seen in this creation that I designed featuring a cream saree in Kota fabric  with hand embroidery motif all over and red appliqué border in one side and pearl adorned golden lace trim border on the other side. (P.S. If you would like to get yourself one, please feel free to contact me. It’s a limited edition piece, exclusively created for the occasion in mind.)

The new year should be the time to pursue goals you want to achieve, by keeping focus as pointed as the red bindi I am wearing.

It should be the time to get your hands wet and dirty, if not in the alta that got my fingertips bright red, it could might as well be in the things you had been waiting to get done for too long.

This Bengali new year is the time to cross bridges to unknown experiences of life that you only saw from the other side but never thought to overcome. Take that first step to cross over and let the Pallu of your saree sweep away trivial dusts of regret and fear.
